No longer showing real, suprising and subversive fashion, the biggest style blogs trade in unattainable aspiration.
I just want to address that Love-Aesthetics and Girl-a-la-mode do not fit in this article (THANK GOD! Even though they DID NOT mention them, but I’ll like to put this forward).
The thing about these two bloggers (Ivania and Charlie May) I admire so much is, yes, they occasionally display their very expensive fancy fancy threads (at least not top to toe) they do love to combined garments which are accessible and affordable to the average wage worker (aka me). They help me understand who I am and what I want to be. They are my creative genius fairies (they inspire me).
The good thing about them is, yeah they travel a bit (not as much as GPG and the likes) but it isn’t over the top, overly glam, overly VIP, just plain and simple… a holiday or for work (real work- sourcing materials for their design venture) or another fashion show, hell not even front row of Balenciaga, just your humble fashion student show (aka ArtEZ) or the very rare MMM.
Then their work, their creative venture. Ivania is a full time blogger and collaborator (and a fantastic mum) and Charlie May a designer both of them allows their readers to explore and understand their work, they show us their creativity and show the average working individual that they are pretty much the same as us, working, busy, and take leisure in dressing up - putting together garments which are DIY-ed, local thrift store, from their own collection or from emerging artist and the very occasional branded items. They allow us to see their mistakes and are not afraid to admit to it.
They don’t strive to be the glossy mag girl but the true working woman, the creative individual working towards a higher ground. And hell even Zanita shows us she works for it. They work to recognise not only themselves but their work, what they worked hard for.
Up until now I wasn’t too sure what Nicole Warne did for a living. I always wondered why she was a full time holiday-er. After reading this post it is then I realise she is a stylist… but does she really make enough to live such a glam lifestyle (branded from head to toe?) this is by no means attacking her, oh goodness she can be my friend any day, but I do feel that her blogs seems to lack something, inspiration and feeling to be more. Lets face it, she has gorgeous model looks and she is well pampered, and hell I really didn’t know what she did for a living besides managing an online vintage shop (which was pretty good a few years back) and somehow on a terribly mundane or bad days (especially when I have a bunch of parents complaining to me about the most minor of things) I dive into the instagram world scroll through and see GPG’s grams and see that her only problem in the world is packing what to wear to her next destination… which mostly comes down to this reaction in me “what..the..hell”.
However, if I scroll down to see Charlie May or Ivania it is a whole different story, it makes me want to MAKE THINGS, it makes me want to quit my job, be fearless and do something that I know I’ll succeed.
I have no idea what I am on about, but all I can say is…. Love-Aesthetics and Girl a-la-mode certainly don’t give me the feeling of impossible as GPG and blogger in that type, but rather those two amazing blogger make me feel possible, possibilities.
